What should I do when maintenance is announced?

We advice to inform the users of your service that will get maintenance. If you do not inform your users it is possible that you will get a lot of phone calls and e-mails. Although maintenance and a service interruption is something that nobodies likes an announcement will save your users time because they do not have to find out weither their internet connection has problems or not.

You can inform your users by using one of the following methods:

  1. Place an announcement on the website or service that maintenance will be performed and what impact it has on the users.
  2. E-mail your users to announce the maintenance. When a user has registered with you (to be a member on for example a forum) you are allowed to send a service e-mail. You do not have to request permission for this from the receiver. However it is always nice to have the option that the user will not receive a service e-mail.
  3. Call your users if possible to inform about this. Although it is not always possible it is a way to inform your users.
